Define a Target Market for Your Small Business
Why? Defining your target customers enables you to tailor your marketing efforts toward the right audience, and use the most effective message for them. Target marketing is more affordable and effective, allowing you to get the best return on your investment.

How? Through careful and thorough analysis of your business and what it sells, determine what makes you different than you competitors, and come up with your target demographic. Evaluate your current customers, and using certain characteristics, create a customer profile of who buys from you. (For individuals, think age, gender, income level, and interests; for businesses your classifications might be number of employees, annual sales, geographic location, etc.)

Then, once your market is defined, narrow it down even further by identifying who your ideal customer would be. Casting too wide of a net is usually a bad idea, as it is highly unlikely that your product or services are something everybody needs. With your ideal customer identified, it will be much easier to determine where and how to market your business. Determining your company’s target customers will enable you to most effectively market your product or services to those most likely to do business with you.
